A lot of people use something to push the amp a little but not overdrive. EP boost etc. Josh uses what looks like a Morely Volume pedal which does have a little boost button on it but I don't think that does what your talking about.

Running out of multiple amps, double tracking etc does what your maybe talking about. A compressor can help too. TC electronics came out with the new Mimiq which gives your doubling live which is cool. As Troy has explained this last couple albums have been a lot cleaner tones than you expect. I'm no doctor though. Check this video with Troy if you haven't already. I think it was posted in this sub in the past.

I assume you don't have professional gear? Not trying to be a dick or anything, but it seems like you're looking at this from the perspective of someone with beginner/cheaper gear. 90% of Josh's tone and sound comes from the guitar and amp itself.

Those big huge heavy single note sounds are the result of professional, good sounding gear. A boost pedal just raises the volume and wouldn't make sense to use on a recording. It's basically a sound you can't replicate with a pedal, especially if you're playing a cheaper guitar out of a solid state practice amp.
